I need help

Start with the box below if today is an emergency. If it is not, find your situation further down, or tell us where you are and what you need.

Recovery

You are not the first person to start over, and most of the people who make it back had somebody hand them a map. The Mile Marker Library is sixteen books, numbered in the order a person needs them and sorted onto four shelves: Right Now, Daily Practice, Rebuilding, and People Around You. Start with Book 1, Don't Panic, for the night someone stops. Every published Mile Marker book is free to download.

Caring for someone, or getting older at home

When someone you love is getting older at home, the help that was supposed to come often stops coming, and nobody tells you who to call. The Sitting Room Series is large-print guides, workbooks, and journals for older adults and the families around them, and most of it is free to print. The Care Complaints Log Book keeps track of what was promised, what happened, and who said what. The Family Integrator's Handbook is for the person in the family who ends up coordinating everything.

Looking for work

American Job Centers give free help with job searches, training, and résumés, and CareerOneStop finds the one nearest you.

More guides

Guides for veterans, for people coming home from prison, for people without housing, and for LGBTQ+ people talking with family or church are being written. Each one will be published at Alder Creek Editions and linked here.

What's near me

Tell us where you are and what you need, and a person will write back with places near you that can help. This form is not for emergencies. If you are in danger, call 911.
